Living on a night schedule means you need services when most of the world is asleep. The grocery store closes at midnight. Your doctor's office opens at 9am โ when you're getting into bed. The pharmacy closes before your shift ends.
This isn't just inconvenient. For night shift workers, lack of access to basic services is a genuine quality-of-life problem that compounds exhaustion and stress.
The good news: 24-hour services exist in almost every category, and finding them has gotten much easier. Here's how to locate everything you need during overnight hours.
How to Find 24-Hour Services Near You
Before diving into categories, the most reliable method is Google Maps with the "Open Now" filter. Search for any type of business, click "Hours," then filter by "Open Now" at 2am. Save anything useful to a list called "Night Shift Resources" โ you'll thank yourself at 3am when you urgently need something.
The Yelp app has a similar 24-hour filter. For chains, check their official store locator โ most let you search by hours.
Groceries and Food
24-Hour Grocery Stores
Large-format retailers often run overnight. Walmart Supercenter locations are frequently 24/7 in the US. Some Kroger, Meijer, and Fred Meyer stores also stay open all night โ check your local branch specifically, since hours vary by location.
If traditional grocery stores near you close overnight, look for:
- Convenience stores with a larger footprint (Wawa, Sheetz, and Casey's carry reasonable grocery staples alongside the typical snack fare)
- 24-hour ethnic grocery stores โ in cities with large immigrant populations, many Asian, Latin, and Middle Eastern grocery markets run late hours or stay open overnight
- Gas station food marts that have expanded their produce and fresh sections
Late-Night Food Delivery
DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub all operate overnight in most metro areas. Filter by "open now" when you place the order. Diners, fast food, and pizza are your most reliable options โ but many cities also have 24-hour sushi, Chinese, and Indian options.
Healthcare
This is the category where preparation matters most. You don't want to figure out where to go when you're already sick.
Emergency Rooms operate 24/7 by law. Know the location of your two nearest ERs before you need them โ the closest one isn't always the fastest depending on traffic patterns at different hours.
Urgent Care is a better option for non-emergency issues (infections, minor injuries, flu symptoms). Many urgent care chains now offer 24-hour locations. Search "[your city] 24 hour urgent care" and save the address and phone number now.
Telehealth has become a genuinely good option for night shift workers. Services like Teladoc, MDLive, and many insurance-provided telehealth platforms offer 24/7 doctor access. For a sore throat, rash, UTI, or prescription renewal at 4am, telehealth is faster and cheaper than any physical location.
24-Hour Pharmacies
CVS and Walgreens both operate 24-hour pharmacy locations. Use their store locators to find the nearest one โ filter specifically for 24-hour pharmacy, not just 24-hour store, since they're different.
Keep a list of two or three options. Your nearest one might run out of a medication; you want a backup.
Fitness
Many gym chains are built around 24/7 access because they know shift workers exist.
Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Crunch, and 24 Hour Fitness (in available markets) all offer round-the-clock access with a key fob or app. These are franchise operations, so confirm your local branch specifically โ not every location in a chain is 24/7.
Working out after a night shift (for most workers, this means 7amโ9am) has real benefits: it helps decompress before sleep and burns off the adrenaline that makes it hard to fall asleep immediately after work. The gym being nearly empty at that hour is a bonus.
Banking and Financial Services
ATMs are the obvious solution for cash at odd hours. Beyond that:
Most major banks now offer 24/7 customer service phone lines, which is useful if your card gets declined, you need to dispute a charge, or you locked yourself out of online banking.
Online banking and apps handle the vast majority of financial tasks without any hours restriction โ transfers, bill pay, check deposits via photo, account management.
For in-person banking on an unusual schedule: some bank branches inside 24-hour Walmart locations stay open until midnight. Check if your bank has any extended-hours locations.
Automotive
24-Hour Gas Stations are common โ most branded stations (Shell, BP, Chevron) with pay-at-pump capability are effectively 24/7 even when the attached store closes.
Emergency Roadside Services: AAA, your auto insurance roadside coverage, or apps like Urgent.ly dispatch 24/7. Save your roadside assistance number in your phone before you need it.
Tire shops that offer 24/7 service exist in most cities โ typically larger chains like Firestone in high-traffic areas. Search for these before you have a flat, not after.
Laundromats
Many coin-operated laundromats are either 24/7 or open until midnight. App-based laundromats (Speed Queen, Washin) often display hours in their app and may have extended access. Doing laundry at 3am on a Tuesday has a distinct advantage: you have the place entirely to yourself.
Building Your Personal Night Shift Resource List
Don't wait until you're sick, hungry, or out of gas to figure this out. Spend 20 minutes right now building a reference list:
- Nearest 24-hour grocery store (with address)
- Nearest 24-hour pharmacy (CVS or Walgreens location)
- Two nearest ERs (with addresses and average wait times from Google)
- Nearest urgent care with 24-hour option
- Your telehealth app login (or your insurance's telehealth number)
- 24-hour gym near your home or workplace
- Roadside assistance number
- Two or three late-night food delivery restaurants you like
Keep this in your phone's notes app. You'll use it, and you'll be glad you made it before 3am when your brain is running on fumes.
Night shift life requires a different infrastructure than the 9-to-5 world assumes. Once you've mapped out your options, the logistics stop being stressful โ they're just your normal.
